Fireflies

I remember running down the street in bare feet,
leather soled chapped and dried by the sun.
Black as night, we dance with the heat on our feet.
We pretend the blacktop is magma.
We know it's not, but we can't stop on a crack
for fear of breaking our mothers back,
and shattering our fathers heart.
Fireflies light up my bedside.
Flickering into the empty room, flash bulbs go off 2002.
We let them breathe through tiny holes
we cut in two liter bottles that were one filled with soda.
We drank it all that summer.
I'll show you. I can run away for days,
forty days alone and on my own, no home.
Free like the fireflies, fluttering bright at night
never to be missed til they fade to black, fade to the mist.
I am free running wild, I'll run and run for miles.
I'll run forever.

we all know his name

I took a walk outside last night.
The darkest night, outside to find
that I'd been led by someone I know,
someone we know.
We all know his name.
We don't dare say it though for fearing of losing self-control.
We don't even want to whisper it,
for fear that he'll come and take us down with him, below the ground.
It's heating up and we'll be found
we're fading now from what is real
we're going back until we feel
the flames licking our face.
Satan's waiting in his sacred place.
Oh God what can you do for me,
I'm in a tough spot don't you see?
